Medicap Pharmacist John Forbes Named Medicine Shoppe International Franchisee of the Year

Sep 2017

Medicap Pharmacy owner, John Forbes, of Urbandale, Iowa, was awarded the Medicine Shoppe International, Inc. Franchisee of the Year Award at Cardinal Health’s Retail Business Conference (RBC) in San Antonio.

Medicine Shoppe International, a Cardinal Health company, is one of the largest franchisors of independent community pharmacies in the U.S. with over 500 Medicine Shoppe and Medicap Pharmacy locations across the United States, and more than 200 international pharmacies. The Medicine Shoppe International Franchisee of the Year award honors the franchisee who best exemplifies an effective use of Medicine Shoppe International’s brand and operating system and who serves as a model for other franchisees to emulate.

Forbes has been a Medicap pharmacist for over 37 years. The award reflects his commitment to viewing his success not by the number of prescriptions he fills for his patients, but by his interactions as a trusted healthcare provider. He provides outstanding services to his customers, even if it means personally delivering prescriptions to patients who are not able to visit his pharmacy. He also takes the time to visit with these patients and assess their health and medication. He provides immunizations, bone density and lipid screenings, compounding, medical and compliance packaging, and medication therapy management services to all of his patients.

“Pharmacists are such an integral part of the healthcare system and so highly respected in their communities,” said Forbes. “I am honored to have been selected as the Medicine Shoppe Franchisee of the Year. I really feel like my work is impacting the community and I would like to see more pharmacists give back.”

The award also reflects Forbes’ active role in his community. He has developed many young community pharmacists, both as employer and mentor. He is also a coordinator for the Central Iowa Honor Flight taking World War II veterans to Washington D.C.; his committee raised over $2 million and honored over 2,500 veteran heroes, which is more than any other Honor Flight hub in the nation.

“John’s commitment to patient-oriented service and his community is admirable and evident in all of the work he does,” said John Fiacco, vice president of Medicine Shoppe International, Inc. and Pharmacy Transition Services at Cardinal Health. “For the past 37 years, he has supported his patients and helped them get access to better healthcare, while tirelessly advocating for the profession of pharmacy and for the public health of the people of Iowa as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives. Medicine Shoppe is proud to have such an outstanding pharmacist as our Franchisee of the Year recipient.”

Forbes has held leadership positions on numerous boards and associations in Iowa. He is considered one of the most respected pharmacists in the state and has earned that respect through daily dedication to best-in-class practices in and out of his pharmacy.

He is currently serving his third term as a state representative in the Iowa legislature. Forbes encourages pharmacists to get involved with state and national politics to positively affect the pharmacy profession.

The American Pharmacists Association’s (APhA) 2017 Hubert H. Humphrey award was also awarded to Forbes, which recognizes an APhA member who has made major contributions in government and legislative service at the local, state or national level.
