Tracking the sales of pseudoephedrine (PSE) sales is a high priority with state and local governments and law enforcement authorities across the country, in order to shut down illegal meth labs. Responding to the need for an electronic standard for tracking these sales, the American Society for Automation in Pharmacy (ASAP) formed a workgroup of industry stakeholders in the early part of 2007 to develop an electronic PSE-tracking standard. This was finalized and announced in September last year. ASAP is making its PSE-tracking standard available at no charge to PSE-tracking programs that would like to replace manual logs with electronic capture of this information at the point of sale. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, seeing the merits of having such a standard, notified all state boards of pharmacy of the availability of the ASAP standard.
