Centice Corporation is introducing PASS Rx, which will verify the majority of oral solid medications dispensed in the United States. The system targets the estimated 52 million errors made each year during the fulfillment process, a figure reported in a study conducted by Auburn University.
PASS Rx uses patented sensor technologies to generate a unique spectral fingerprint and image data of the size, color, and shape of the drug. This information is compared to the company's proprietary database for verification. This verification of the drug and its strength through the capped vial is done in an average of six seconds.
Ray Swanson, president and CEO of the Morrisville, N.C., company, says, "Our goal is to help pharmacists improve quality, streamline workflow, and become more efficient at delivering enhanced patient care."
The initial rollout of PASS Rx is targeted to select pharmacies while Centice scales up its manufacturing. The company was founded in 2004.
