The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urging the FDA to move quickly in adopting a singe patient medication information (PMI) document.

NACDS is encouraging the transition from medication guides, patient package inserts, and consumer medication information to a one-document solution. The organization first proposed this solution in 2007, along with a number of other industry stakeholders. Currently, patients are receiving information generated from different sources and, as NACDS pointed out to the FDA, "this tends to be overly complex and incomprehensible to patients."

The letter referenced a 2009 report by the New England Healthcare Institute that found poor medication adherence accounts for roughly $290 billion a year in additional healthcare costs.
