Dr. James Lott, Pharm.D., M.P.P, founder and CEO of Script Health started the petition to Food and Drug Administration Chief Scientist Jacqueline A. O’Shaughnessy, Ph.D.

Dr. Lott writes:

“Pfizer’s life-saving Paxlovid pill, which was proven in clinical trials to prevent hospitalization for those with active COVID infections by as much as 89%, is an astonishing scientific breakthrough with the potential to save countless lives and curtail the length of this horrible pandemic.

But a clause in the FDA’s emergency authorization means that prescriptions for Paxlovid and Molnupiravir can only be issued by physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

We are a collective of pharmacists outraged by this unnecessary limitation. At a time when the omicron variant threatens to overwhelm our healthcare system, demanding that potentially COVID-positive patients rely on only a few channels for any chance of treatment is a horrible strategy.

We want to keep our communities safe and healthy. We want to provide access to life-saving medication, especially to patients who might not have access to emergency rooms or urgent care clinics due to their socio-economic status.

We insist that the FDA #LetUsPrescribe to save lives.”

National pharmacy groups have also made their voices heard on this issue. You can read more about this at “FDA’s Decision to Block Pharmacists from Ordering COVID-19 Oral Antivirals Will Hurt COVID Positive Patients, National Pharmacy Groups Warn.”
