2018 is just about here, and most pharmacies will have already been thinking about strategy for the coming year. What will the key trends be? Where are the best places to put investment? How can you get more out of technology investments you’ve already made? And what markets will be growing and offering new revenue opportunities? Here we take a look at what a number of pharmacy technology vendors see as the priorities for 2018.

In January 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented a new federal rule, often called the “short-cycle dispensing rule,” aimed at reducing Medicare waste. As a result, billing for these prescriptions has become more complex, lending itself to possible billing errors that can result in lost revenue for pharmacies.
Long-term care (LTC) pharmacies have been on the leading edge of some important trends. For example, they‘re innovators in med sync and adherence packaging and they‘ve built platforms to connect care provider teams. With this record of innovation in mind, we checked in with four closed-door long-term care pharmacies to find out how they are continuing to raise the bar in the profession.
Fifteen or 20 years ago, point-of-sale systems were considered by many as “glorified cash registers,” and their primary benefit was in the front end. These days, as margins continue to decline, and pharmacy owners need to offer more services to their customers, the POS system has emerged as an essential business tool for a successful pharmacy.
