In 2016, the USA women’s gymnastics team won the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Achieving that elite award depended on each athlete’s individual performance. Scores were added up per country and the team with the highest total score won the gold—team USA. Independent pharmacies within a PSAO’s network belong to a team and much like the USA Olympic teams, each pharmacy contributes to the overall team score. In place of a medal, the collective effort is rewarded by lower DIR-like fees, performance paybacks, or more favorable reimbursement.
